Although car air conditioning has the same basic system with room and building air conditioning, it has completely different source of power. While room and building air conditioning using electrical power source to rotate compressor, the car air conditioning use the car engine rotation to rotate the compressor.
The car engine it self works in rotating action, so to transfer the power it only needs a v-belt connection to the compressor.

For you who living in the sub tropical area, the car air conditioning function is to cool you down in the summer and warm you up in the winter. So basically there are two function of the air conditioning, to heat up and to cool down the car room temperature. From now on let's use AC unit phrase to call the air conditioning unit.
But where does the cool and the warm of air conditioning come from? As I describe it in the earliest paragraph, the car AC unit needs engine power to rotate the compressor. The compressor is like the heart of human to circulate the blood through the veins, compressor pumping refrigerant through the car AC system. This is the system that responsible to generate cool air for car room.
Whilst the warm air actually using the engine cooling system as the source of energy. As you know car using water to keep engine temperature at normal stage. The water runs through pipe line and water line around engine block goes to radiator to cool it down and then back to the engine cooling system again. There the water goes as circles.
For the purpose of heating the car room, car maker make channel with small metal pipe from engine cooling system to the car AC unit inside the car room, usually under the dash board, as the source of heat that carry on into the room by the blower. The water come back to the engine cooling system again and follow the mainstream to the radiator.
So to choose what kind of air you want, cool or warm, you just sets the switch on the AC unit control.
